2012 Captain's Charity

New club captain David Wood has chosen The Wooden Spoon Charity to be the club charity in 2012. Wooden Spoon is a children's charity founded in 1983, when the England rugby team received the Wooden Spoon in the 5 Nations. Spoon is dedicated to helping children and young people who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially by using sport as a method of improving lives while harnessing the spirit and values of rugby. Wooden Spoon encompasses more than 10,000 members across the UK and Ireland with over 40 regional volunteer committees, who are dedicated to organising hundreds of fundraising events and challenges. To date, Spoon has helped over 500,000 children and donated over £15 million to a variety of causes. David said one of the main reasons he chose the charity was that every penny raised in Devon is spent on various project only in Devon.

Annual Dinner & Dance

Last weekend Dainton Park Golf Club capped off a successful year with their Annual Dinner & Dance at the Palace Hotel in Torquay. Over 130 members and guests attended the evening, which is held annually to celebrate the golfing year and congratulate the winners of the major competitions. The evening began with a drinks reception for captains and partners of all the other South Devon Clubs, followed by a four course meal and speeches. After dinner, Club Captain John Strainge took the opportunity to mention a few notable achievements from the year, particularly the Torbay Cup win, the ladies team reaching the 6th round of the mail on Sunday and Jenny Rowe and Mel Bryant winning the Express and Echo. After dinner, the entertainment was provided by local band ‘The Cadence’. It was a great finale to a fantastic year at Dainton, and many thanks go out to the Palace Hotel for their hospitality.
